Drawing requires response. The grains on the surface of the wood are coarse. Ink has its own ideas of where it should go. I bring the
pencil to the surface, paper, wood, and it doesn’t respond as anticipated. If I even tried to anticipate it. I just did it, to see what would
happen. I have to hold the pencil in different ways - there is no right position for the pencil between fingers. To get into the crevasses
of the grain, one must respond to the surface, rather than dominate.
