My most recent landscape-y paintings are inspired by wilderness, Jungian concepts of shadow work, and the process of inner integration. The relationship between body and landscape is important to me, a sky/ground composition formed. It took the shape of a mountain — no mountain in particular, despite my love for our Cascadian totem, Tahoma (Mt. Rainier). These have no referent to any physical place. But mountains to me are liminal spaces. They evoke a betweenness of ground and sky.
Mountains! Sometimes, when I dwell in alpine places and look up into the immense sky — particularly after sunset, when the blue is especially dark and simultaneously glows — I feel a sensation of floating. It’s as if gravity becomes less meaningful and I could simply drift into the expanses of the Universe.
